It is important to understand how this translation came to be. It was a very difficult process, costing the lives of many good people before the ultimate success--the King James Bible version. Benson's writing provides a comprehensive look into nearly every aspect of this topic. He brings the key players to life as he describes their actions, as well as providing a wonderful look at the several others who either opposed or supported the effort. Today those of us in the English-speaking world use many of the phrases that the King James gave us--often without realizing the source. You will be intrigued to see how your speech is impacted by this text--even if you've not read it yet. Tells how steep a price was paid to simply translate the Bible into the vernacular, and how doing this led to the thinking that developed parliamentary powers in England, and the US Declaration of Independence and US Constitution. Hurrah : Nicely written and seamlessly weaves together the political history and the religious history of the English bible. Fascinating on both sides . I had no idea how thoroughly the two were woven together. The book also gives poetry its due, with side by side comparisons of different translations. This bible and the unequal prose with which it is endowed, became a standard for the English speaking world. Much of the phraseology contained therein became a part of our common speach since many learned to read using this masterpiece of theology and prose both through out the British Empire and certainly in the United States.
